Published purpose

This community-based research project directly contributes to land claim implementation by asking how to build [the Tagish and Tlingit people of Carcross/Tagish First Nation (C/TFN)]’s capacity to both understand the current state of water and to protect the water using the best available tools from Western and Indigenous knowledge systems. To achieve this, [C/TFN] will: 1) Develop a C/TFN water strategy including draft water legislation and regulations; 2) Use water chemistry, spatial and Indigenous research methods to identity water data gaps and analyze aquatic (biophysical and cultural) risk; and 3) Create a community-based water monitoring and enforcement plan for the water strategy and legislation. This project engages C/TFN Citizens in all phases of the project through Indigenous knowledge research that builds capacity building mobilizes knowledge for water governance and cultural revitalization.
