Published purpose
The Government of the Northwest Territories is proposing the development of a flood mitigation plan for the Hamlet of Aklavik, a community that faces extreme risk of flooding every year. Through the federal Flood Damage Risk Reduction Program in 1979, Aklavik was designated as a flood risk community and a flood risk map was generated depicting flood ways and flood fringe. •Historically Aklavik has been at extreme risk of flooding with some level of flooding occurring with each spring breakup. •Creating a Flood Mitigation Plan for Aklavik would help address the high flood risk the community faces every year.
