Published purpose

This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the thirteenth replenishment of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). IFAD uses these funds, along with other donor funding, to achieve its mandate. IFAD’s mandate is to support rural populations, especially smallholder farmers, to achieve food security and nutrition, overcome poverty and become resilient, especially to the effects of climate change. IFAD provides grants and low-interest loans to developing countries to support programmes and projects that promote agricultural growth and inclusive rural transformation. The overarching priority of this replenishment is to build resilient rural livelihoods and food systems. To achieve this, IFAD is focusing on the three priority areas: i) enhancing focus on fragile contexts; ii) investing in biodiversity and climate resilience of small-scale producers; and iii) increasing engagement with the private sector. IFAD is also raising ambition with respect to its four mainstreaming themes of environment and climate, gender, youth and nutrition.
