Published purpose

This 28-month project will develop and implement an Intrafamilial Homicides (IH) risk assessment tool to better equip the Montreal police department (SPVM) in their efforts to address the deeper causes of gender-based violence in Montréal. The Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) will achieve this objective by collecting data and analyzing SPVM records on 1) intrafamilial homicides, 2) attempted murders and 3) family/intimate partner violence to explore promising practices in preventing IH and to analyze changes in practices that could improve the SPVM’s current response. In addition, a data watch on IH prevention will be established to track any changes in practices within the SPVM and their impact on improving support for IH victims in the Montreal area. By the end of the project, UQAM will have contributed to eliminating violence against women and girls by enhancing the police response to family and intimate partner violence in an effort to prevent intrafamilial (IH) homicides.
