Published purpose
Through this 32-month project, British Columbia Association of First Nations (BCAFN) will increase its ability to prevent and address gender-based violence against First Nations women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. This will be achieved by working with partners to identify opportunities to advocate for legislation that will result in improved responses to MMIWG2S+. The project will also support implementation of BCAFN’s Women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ Strategic Action plan and enhance capacity for BCAFN’s Women’s and 2SLGBTQQIA+ representatives to engage First Nations and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, to be spokespersons, and to provide guidance to ensure that BCAFN’s advocacy is intersectional, inclusive, and strategic. BCAFN will develop evergreen Orientation kits for the 2SLGBTQQIA+ and Women representatives to ensure common understanding of key issues and positions and clarity regarding roles and responsibilities. Through this project BCAFN will continue to collaborate on issues of shared priority with the Union of BC Indian Chiefs and First Nations Summit as the First Nations Leadership Council, as well as a number of sector specific First Nations Organizations that First Nations in BC have established as advocacy and technical support bodies. By the end of the project, BCAFN will have strengthened their capacity to prevent and address GBV against First Nations women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people across British Columbia.
