Big Sisters of B.C. Lower Mainland

Published purpose

Through this 42-month project, Big Sisters of Lower Mainland will develop and implement an In-School Group Mentoring “Power in Prevention” program, to strengthen the GBV sector. It will address gaps in GBV programming by tailoring the project activities to underserved populations during their middle childhood and youth. To do so, the project will engage community partners, families, and youth with diverse lived experiences who will help to inform the adaptation of an existing In-School Group Mentoring program framework and develop an age appropriate, activity-based curriculum focused on identifying and strengthening participants’ GBV protective factors with the guidance and support of mentors. An external evaluator will measure and assess the impact of the promising practice. Big Sisters of Lower Mainland will host youth and communication advisory councils, youth forums, lead a public education campaign, and develop a toolkit to share information on the promising practice with other organizations (including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada agencies) so that they may replicate it or expand upon it. With the Supplemental funds and extension provided in early 2026, Big Sisters of B.C. Lower Mainland will participate in GBV prevention knowledge-sharing forums and improve and expand GBV prevention curriculum and group mentoring.
