Published purpose

Through this 48-month project, Puakuteu, comité de femmes de Mashteuiatsh, will develop and implement a system of support workers to strengthen the gender-based violence sector. The organization will address access to adequate and appropriate resources on violence in the community; the need to provide women experiencing violence with tools; and the need to reshape Pekuakamiulnuatsh women’s identity and include the cultural dimension in implementing holistic solutions by, for, and with Indigenous women. To achieve this goal, the project will include developing a communication plan to reach and recruit the target population of women who could act as a support worker, developing the support worker system, and raising awareness within the Mashteuiatsh community on gender-based violence. An external evaluation will help measure and assess the impacts of this promising practice. Puakuteu, comité de femmes de Mashteuiatsh, will visit various Indigenous communities to inform others about the promising practice so that they can emulate or scale it. With the supplemental funds and 18-month extension provided in early 2026, Puakuteu, Comité de femmes de Mashteuiatsh, will promote the sustainability of the domestic violence caregiver support group by hosting meetings on new topics related to this issue and will create a roundtable involving key partners working with clients who are likely to experience domestic violence and aligning with promising practices in caregiving. Through this they will further advance gender equality.
