Published purpose

With Canada's support, the United Nations (UN) Department of Peace Operations and Department of Management Strategy, Compliance and Policy aim to enhance UN peace operations trough training and capacity building to support field mission globally. Project activities include: (1) enhancing policy, guidance, and training on child protection for civilian and uniformed personnel. This is done to reinforce the child protection mandate in UN peace operations; (2) supporting the UN system to plan and manage transitions from peacekeeping missions by increasing the capacity of national, regional, and international partners to sustain peace beyond mission withdrawal; (3) supporting the UN advisory and mobile teams to work with troop and police contributing countries on their national explosive ordinance disposal curricula and to bring them in line with the UN minimum standards; (4) providing specialized advice and technical assistance to missions with protection of civilians mandates, and ensuring protection of civilians perspectives are in all standard operating procedures and UN doctrine; (5) supporting the implementation of the UN’s zero-tolerance policy on sexual exploitation and abuse. This is done through training and vetting, supporting missions to prevent and respond to misconduct, and improving strategic communications to ensure public transparency and accountability; (6) providing leadership training to military leaders to improve their understanding of contemporary peacekeeping priorities, improve their leadership capabilities and accountability, and mitigate challenges of current peacekeeping environments; (7) advancing the implementation of the conflict-related sexual violence mandate in UN peace operations and providing support to missions; and (8) strengthening the ability to collect and analyze data to enable missions to improve early warning and quick responses to security incidents and violent outbreak.
