Published purpose

This project aims to strengthen the resilience and stability of artisanal mining communities in Côte d’Ivoire (Bounkani and Hambol) and Burkina Faso (Nando) by encouraging the integration of mining communities into formal government frameworks. The project implements interventions across 3 complementary areas: the adoption of practices aligned with international standards by artisanal and small-scale mining operators (ASMOs); increased fiscal clarity and transparency, promoting the formalization of the artisanal mining sector; and greater financial and decision-making inclusion of women in artisanal mining. Project activities include: 1) conducting a study on illicit gold flows between Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso; 2) building the capacity of artisanal gold miners to formalize their operations and comply with national and international mining standards, to offer tangible and viable alternatives to informality and illicit networks; 3) organizing awareness-raising, exchange, and working workshops with various stakeholders involved in the EMAPE; 4) supporting the establishment of village savings and credit associations (AVEC).
