Published purpose

This project aims to safely clean up and dispose of tsunami debris and other mixed waste on 74 affected islands, and construct waste management disposal and storage facilities in conjunction with an awareness and education program to promote environmentally sound and sustainable waste management practices for the future. The objectives of this program include: (i) clear debris and waste from the agreed upon islands (74) of the Republic of Maldives; (ii) develop waste management disposal and storage facilities in accordance with the national waste management policies on each of the selected islands in which waste can be appropriately separated and stored; (iii) develop a system in accordance with government policies for the safe removal and disposal of separated and stored waste; and (iv) establish community awareness programs on each of the relevant islands to educate local inhabitants on appropriate waste separation and management practices with objectives to reduce, reuse and recycle.
