Published purpose

This Technical Assistance project was designed to directly strengthen the implementation of the Teacher Education Support Project (TESP) which aimed to strengthen the quality, relevance, and management of teacher education in Tanzania by modernizing learning environments, building a stronger and better prepared teaching workforce, and institutionalizing gender equality across all 35 government Teachers’ Colleges, with the overarching goal of ensuring that new teachers enter the profession with stronger skills, more effective pedagogical practices, and a deeper capacity to deliver inclusive, high quality instruction. Project activities included: (1) provide technical advice to the Ministry of Education to review and update the teacher education curriculum, including integrating gender-equality; (2) design and deliver professional development for teachers’ college instructors, college management teams, and the Ministry, covering various topics, including improved methodologies for teaching basic numeracy, literacy, science, and mathematics, with gender responsive and learner centered strategies, and directly deliver selected training sessions to build instructor capacity; (3) support the use of Information and Communication Technology to improve teacher training and classroom learning; and (4) strengthen gender equality through professional development and curriculum revisions.
