Published purpose
This Project will advance health equity and climate resilience in northern and remote regions by creating decentralized, community-driven systems for rapid One Health monitoring. Building on the One Yukon Coalition’s proven wastewater monitoring network and NRC’s Arctic and Northern Challenge Development Grant, the initiative will refine GeneXpert and portable sequencing protocols in collaboration with NRC researchers, and optimize nucleic-acid preservation methods to enable near real-time detection of health and environmental threats. Two Yukon communities will host pilot testing hubs equipped with portable laboratory units and trained local operators. Integrated molecular data will feed into decision-support dashboards co-developed with Indigenous decision-makers under OCAP® principles. By bridging molecular science, Indigenous governance, and data innovation, the Project will deliver validated northern testing protocols, sustainable local capacity, and actionable insights to protect community health and cosystems across Canada’s Northern, Remote, Rural, and Indigenous (NRRI) regions.
