Published purpose
This grant represents Canada’s long-term institutional support (LTIS) to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in 2017. This annual contribution by Canada is used to support the implementation of UNFPA’s mandate and its core functions. The contributions of all donors are publicized each year by the institution. Based on Canada’s annual LTIS contribution, it is consistently ranked among the top 15 donors to UNFPA. UNFPA’s mandate is to support countries in using population data to develop policies and programs that reduce poverty and ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect. UNFPA focuses on three main areas: reproductive health and rights, gender equality, and population and development strategies. Canada’s support to UNFPA contributes to increasing access to reproductive health, developing development policies that take population dynamics into account, and improving the status of girls and women worldwide.
