Published purpose

June 2026 – Two powerful earthquakes struck north-central Venezuela in rapid succession, causing widespread devastation across Caracas, La Guaira, and surrounding states. The disaster has resulted in significant loss of life, extensive damage to homes, critical infrastructure, and public services, while displacing thousands of people. To respond to needs emerging from this disaster, the Secretary of State (International Development) announced that Canada would match donations made to the Canadian Red Cross Society (CRCS) for Venezuela. With GAC’s support, the CRCS, via the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), is enabling the Venezuelan Red Cross to deliver a comprehensive life-saving response. Project activities include: (1) providing emergency shelter assistance; (2) providing multipurpose cash assistance and essential relief items; (3) providing health services, including first aid, triage, emergency medical services, mental health and psychosocial support, and reinforcement of affected health facilities; (4) providing water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services; and (5) providing protection services, including restoration of family links, case management, and assistance for families searching for missing relatives.
