Published purpose

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are: • Improve understanding of the relevance and importance of biobanking and genomic research for First Nations communities; • Within the context of current national and international movements towards data sharing and open science, analyze aspects of engaging in biobanking and genomic research in First Nations’ contexts, including cultural considerations, issues of consent, governance, ownership and storage of data and biosamples; • Identify key considerations to the success of biobanking and genomic research with First Nations, including application of the OCAP ® principles to both physical samples and associated data, and strategies to mitigate challenges; • Examine essential considerations for First Nations communities to lead, manage, govern, and/or implement biobanking and genomic research in accordance with their rights of data sovereignty; • Develop a Knowledge Mobilization plan, describing anticipated First Nations-driven KM activities and efforts, KM objectives, and their connection to expected impacts; • Mobilize the resulting knowledge to First Nations communities and organizations, the broader health research community, and decision-makers.
