Published purpose

The initiative supports technical vocational education and training (TVET) reform in Kenya, helping create a strong, demand-driven and industry-responsive training system in growing industries. Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) is seeking to bridge the current skills gap in Kenya's demand-driven sectors by improving the quality and relevance of curricula, the technical skills, and knowledge of lecturers as well as improving the country's overall training infrastructure. This initiative helps Kenyans, especially youth, take advantage of increased employment opportunities in growing industries such as the agriculture and energy sectors, particularly among marginalized populations in the northern, drought-prone areas, which are some of the poorest regions of the country. Activities include: (1) Developing industry-responsive and gender-sensitive competency-based training curricula; (2) Providing training delivered by experts from Canadian technical training institutions specializing in extractives and related sectors to 200 technical instructors, including through the use of instructional technology; (3) Providing and install training equipment for Kenyan partner technical training institutions for the delivery of competency-based training; (4) Delivering leadership and management training by experts from Canadian technical training institutions to 100 administrators and governors at Kenyan partner technical training institutions; (5) Organizing workshops to engage 500 private and public sector TVET stakeholders in the implementation of TVET reform and to share best practices; and (6) Launching outreach and public awareness campaigns to promote skills training programs within local communities, directly benefitting 2080 instructors, administrators and governors, private and public sector TVET stakeholders and students.
