Published purpose
The CIHR HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBI) Research Initiative, under the leadership of the CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity (CIHR-III), defines STBBI as infections that are transmitted primarily through exchange of body fluids during sexual contact and/or through blood, and supports projects with a primary focus on STBBI of public health relevance, including but not limited to HIV/AIDS, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and human papillomavirus. This funding is provided across all CIHR research themes: biomedical research, clinical research, health services research and social, cultural, environmental and population health research. Research that focuses on key populations disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS and STBBI is highly encouraged. In alignment with CIHR's commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the research system, the Research Initiative champions EDI as a means to support excellence in research, training and knowledge mobilization. Therefore, we encourage people from diverse backgrounds, including groups underrepresented in science such as women and racial and ethnic minorities, to apply. This Priority Announcement will prioritize funding for research on HIV/AIDS and/or STBBI aligned with the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative: Strategic Plan (2022-2027) in the following research areas: • Improving health equity by advancing research to understand and address determinants of health, new models of care, or sexual and reproductive health for people living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS and STBBI; or • Accelerating discovery and innovation by advancing research on innovative technologies for testing and surveillance, interactions among infections and co-morbidities, or design and development of next-generation interventions.
