Published purpose

The CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH) has the broad mandate of supporting research on the heart, lung, brain (stroke), blood, blood vessels, critical and intensive care, and sleep. This Priority Announcement (PA) is focused on any research area related to ICRH’s mandate areas as they impact acute care in older adults (65 years or older). The proposed research should inform the management of acute care in older adults including studies on relevant risk factors for adverse outcomes of acute care, recovery and end-of-life care in elderly populations. For the purpose of the PA: • Acute care includes emergency room care, non-elective surgical care, hospitalizations longer than 72 hours, coronary unit care, intensive unit care, post-acute in hospital recovery care and re-hospitalizations. • Conditions of the heart include inherited and acquired arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies, as well as congenital and acquired structural and valvular heart disease. • Conditions of the circulatory system comprise hypertension and atherosclerosis, and neurovascular diseases.
