Published purpose

The CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH) has the broad mandate of supporting research on the heart, lung, brain (stroke), blood, blood vessels, critical and intensive care, and sleep. This Priority Announcement (PA) is focused on measuring trends in outcomes over time in Canadians of all ages with conditions of the heart and of the circulatory system. The proposed research should analyse trends over time in outcomes of Canadian populations with acute and non-acute conditions of the heart and circulation. Outcomes include but are not limited to mortality, morbidity and measures of quality of life. Research should leverage secondary use of existing national and/or provincial administrative health databases including, but not limited to, Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), Institute for clinical Evaluation (IC/ES) in Ontario, Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) and MED-ÉCHO in Quebec, and Institute of Health Economics (IHE) Data in Alberta. For the purpose of this PA: • Conditions of the heart include inherited and acquired arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies, as well as congenital and acquired structural and valvular heart disease. • Conditions of the circulatory system comprise hypertension and atherosclerosis including familial hypercholesterolemia, as well as neurovascular diseases. • Acute conditions include but are not limited to Sudden Cardiac Death.
