Published purpose
Perception of Self-Motion In Space. The Perception of Self-Motion (POSM) project investigates the amplitude of motion evoked by a given pattern of optic flow by measuring how far a participant needs to “travel” in a simulated environment to reach a previously viewed target. Motion profiles will be fit by a model we have developed to describe visually induced motion on earth: our “leaky spatial integrator” model of vection. Perceived tilt will be measured by having subjects indicate their perceived posture relative to the remembered external environment (i.e., the ISS). Control experiments will measure perceived distance to dissociate the interpretation of perceived motion from errors in perceived distance.
