Published purpose

Following the JWST ERS and Cycle 1 GO Announcement of Opportunity published on June 14, 2021, the CSA is providing funding via a Grant Agreement to the university to conduct research using the JWST. This project will advance our knowledge of binary neutron star (NS) mergers and gravitational waves by answering the following questions: What fraction of the heaviest elements come from NS mergers? What are the progenitors of BNS systems? How fast is the Universe expanding? Researchers will use NIRSpec, NIRCam and MIRI aboard the JWST to observe an electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave source within the first 30 days post-explosion.
