Published purpose

The NASA New Horizons (NH) Kuiper Extended Mission (KEM) is an extension of the New Horizons Pluto mission. In addition to the recent flyby of the object 2014 MU69, during the KEM phase, New Horizons is taking advantage of its location directly within the Kuiper Belt to gather observations of distant Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) over a large range of phase angles. This task is impossible from any Earth localized observatory. The KEM directly addresses the PGGP-01 priority of the Canadian Space Exploration Plan.
