Published purpose

The New Brunswick Indigenous Court Support Workers Project is a province-wide initiative that involves a partnership between Mi'gmawe'l Tplu'taqnn Incorporated, the Peskotomuhkati Nation, the Wolastoqiyik Nation in New Brunswick and; the Kopit Lodge of Elsipogtog First Nation. The project will identify needs and gaps in services for Indigenous peoples in New Brunswick involved in the criminal justice system. Through a multifaceted research approach that includes consultation and engagement, a report with findings and an Indigenous Courtwork Program model that includes the writing of Gladue reports will be produced. This model will inform the potential implementation of an Indigenous Courtwork Program in New Brunswick. Project partners include Indigenous communities across the province who provide regional knowledge and relevant expertise. The project will be carried out with the support and guidance of a Steering Committee comprised of at least one representative from each of the Indigenous project partners as well as key players in the justice system.
