Published purpose

This project aims to strengthen community-led peacebuilding and conflict resolution mechanisms within the Abyei Administrative Area (AAA). The project focuses on improving the functioning of the Community Court, the Community Peace Committee and the Amiet market. The project also facilitates the peaceful seasonal movement of cattle through the cattle corridors. This improves inter-community relations, trade and livelihoods for herders, traders and the settled population and reduces the potential for violent conflict. Project activities include: (1) training Community Court judges and women councillors on the management of cases involving sexual and gender-based violence, prostitution and juvenile crime; (2) training Amiet Market stakeholders on safe inter-community trade practices; (3) establishing women and youth Community Court subcommittees; (4) training a network of mediators to respond to low-intensity disputes and to signal escalating tensions to the Community Peace Committee; and (5) facilitating peace conferences between Misseriya herders and Ngok Dinka farmers, ensuring the timing of seasonal movements through Abyei’s cattle corridors is agreed . Disputes in Abyei are often inter-communal in nature arising between Abeyi’s two predominant ethnic groupings, the Ngok Dinka and the Misseriya. As a contested area between Sudan and South Sudan, the AAA lacks state-run institutions. Abeyi’s community-led peace infrastructure consists of the Community Peace Committee, the Community Court and the Amiet Market. Each of these entities supports inter-communal relations.. There is an ethnic balance in the composition of the peace committee. The market brings together people from across the area.
