Published purpose
This project reduces the threat posed by stolen or illicitly-trafficked nuclear or radiological materials, for the population of Lebanon and neighbouring countries. The project restores radiation detection capabilities at the Port of Beirut, following the August 2020 explosion. Project activities include: (1) replacing radiation portal monitors damaged during the explosion; (2) providing additional radiation portal monitors and handheld secondary inspection equipment for newly constructed shipping lanes; and (3) rebuilding the central alarm station to provide comprehensive monitoring at the port.
