Published purpose
This project aims to support a three-day “Latin American Conference on the United Nations Secretary General’s Mechanism for Investigation of Alleged Use of Chemical and Biological Weapons (UNSGM)”. The conference, to be held in fall 2025 in Santiago, Chile, seeks to convene foreign policy officials, National Authorities of the CWC and BTWC and chem/bio (CB) security and non-proliferation experts from across Latin America, and organizations engaged in CB security capacity building (e.g. UNODA, UNLIREC and CICTE/OAS). Latin America is currently underrepresented on the SGM rosters but has a significant pool of experts, consultants, and laboratories to support it. By bringing together authorities and experts in CB security from around the region, the project seeks to provide a better understanding of the unique investigative role of the UNSGM and encourage increased contributions from the region.
