Published purpose
The project seeks to support local governments to successfully manage the impacts and benefits from natural resource development, and to promote sustainable economic growth in Colombia and Peru. The project also aims to strengthen the capacity of local governments in mining communities to manage complex social, economic and environmental issues associated with mining activity, while promoting economic growth that builds more resilient and self-reliant communities. The project is using a regional approach to ensure that the knowledge, tools and experience gathered during the project are widely disseminated, and shared with other mining communities in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Project activities include: (1) providing local leadership training in areas such as participatory decision making, impact assessment, and conflict resolution; (2) providing technical assistance and training to local governments to support planning, management and service delivery; (3) supporting the preparation of local economic development plans; and (4) providing training to local governments on engaging industry and governments to promote new policies and practices that improve community-company relations.
