L'AMIE

Published purpose

This project aims to reduce the mortality rate among mothers and children in Burundi based on the achievements of a previous project on maternal, newborn and child, supported by Canada. The project uses former beneficiaries of the project "Integrated Prevention of HIV Transmission From Mother to Child (PMTCT) in Burundi", to lead community outreach on the prevention of HIV from mother to child during the perinatal period (shortly before or after birth). This approach, in addition to the availability of new services at the health center, contributes to increased utilization of essential health services. The project also seeks to improve the delivery of essential health services for these clients by strengthening the abilities of health center staff. Project activities include: (1) the design and management of a new maternal and child health program; (2) the development and transmission of a participatory training program for community ambassadors to develop populations’ awareness; (3) the registration of pregnant women to services and their monitoring; (4) the recruitment of Canadian experts for the training of local teams; and (5) the development of L'AMIE’s presence in social media in order to increase the visibility of the organization’s public awareness activities. It is expected that this project directly contributes to improving the health of approximately 64,000 people, including 50,000 children, and indirectly benefits more than 415,000 people. This project is implemented by a consortium led by L'AMIE with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), and in collaboration with the following local partner: Association pour la prise en charge des orphelins du Sida (APECOS).
