Published purpose

This project aims to improve the effectiveness of defence counsels appearing before international courts and tribunals, as well as in proceedings in Lebanon and the wider Arabic-speaking region. This project supports efforts by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) to publish a handbook on international criminal trials for legal practitioners, law students, and the public. The STL, established by the United Nations in 2009, is the first international criminal tribunal to adjudicate cases involving terrorism as a criminal offence in the Middle East. To preserve lessons learned, the handbook aims to capture the challenges encountered and solutions found over the course of its operations and those of other international courts and tribunals.
