Published purpose

August 2020 - In response to the explosions in Beirut on August 4th, the United Nations launched a flash appeal on August 14th, 2020. The flash appeal seeks to respond to the significant immediate humanitarian consequences of the explosions. The appeal works to prioritize life-saving responses and protection. These activities continue alongside the pre-existing humanitarian response for the Lebanese and non-Lebanese population, including Syrian and Palestinian refugees . With the support of GAC and other donors, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) provides assistance and protection to refugees, internally displaced persons and other persons of concern. The UNHCR’s response focuses on addressing pressing shelter and protection needs of the most vulnerable persons affected by the blast, while paving the way for their recovery and rehabilitation in the medium term. The response adopts a whole-population approach, targeting the most affected and most vulnerable households and individuals, including Lebanese, refugees and migrant workers in Beirut, and those displaced outside the city. Project activities include: (1) providing shelter, clothing and other essential non-food items; and (2) providing protection, including against sexual and gender-based violence, and for children.
