Published purpose

This project examines using sanctions to increase accountability and reduce impunity for conflict-related sexual violence. It does this by focusing on Myanmar as a case study, analyzing how the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United Nations, and , the United States, have responded to reports of widespread and systematic sexual violence by Myanmar’s military (the Tatmadaw). It also proposes tailored recommendations for the UN and Member States, including Canada, to improve the use of sanctions to respond to conflict-related sexual violence. Project activities include: (1) conducting a literature review on the effectiveness of targeted sanctions; (2) completing a case study of conflict-related sexual violence in Myanmar and the global response effort, including interviews with stakeholders; and (3) producing a research report and policy brief with actionable recommendations for stakeholders.
