Published purpose
The project aims to improve the quality of education for indigenous and rural children, especially girls, in Southern Andean and Amazonian Peru through Intercultural Bilingual Education, which provides education in the first language of the learner and integrates the learner’s culture. Some project activities include: (i) providing training to teachers in culturally-sensitive and gender-sensitive approaches to teaching; (ii) providing management training to principals and regional government education officials; (iii) supporting the production of quality learning materials; (iv) providing coaching to parents and community members to help them become more involved in monitoring the education system and reinforcing culturally and gender-sensitive approaches to education; (v) improving learning strategies; and (vi) strengthening the ability of regional governments to manage teacher training and financial and technical resources. This contribution enables UNICEF to expand its education program in Ayacucho, Amazonas, Apurímac, Cusco and Ucayali, regions in Peru characterized by extremely high poverty levels, indigenous populations, high prevalence of chronic malnutrition among children and overall lack of quality basic services, including health, education, water and sanitation."
