Published purpose

This contribution represents Canada’s institutional support to HakiElimu, a Tanzanian civil society organization working in the education sector. HakiElimu’s mandate is to promote improved quality, transparency and accountability of investments in education. HakiElimu translates complex concepts into something that the average Tanzanian can understand and organizes community meetings and national multimedia campaigns to encourage awareness of key education issues. The organization seeks to ensure that citizens are better informed so that they have the opportunity to promote creative solutions to improve education, and monitor the activities of their local and national leaders and hold them to account. HakiElimu works through a grassroots network of over 35,000 community based organizations and individuals who want to make a difference in their local schools and communities. Supporting the work of HakiElimu helps to ensure that more children are actively learning in public schools and more Tanzanians are engaged in debates about improving the quality of education.
