Published purpose
This project aims to reduce the impacts of the removal of subsidies on the Sudanese population. These subsidies help to make goods like food and fuel more affordable, so their removal is expected to cause financial challenges for families. This project works to provide capacity-building support to the Government of Sudan as it builds a social safety net program. Project activities include: (1) providing a cash transfer to vulnerable families for up to 80% of the Sudanese population; (2) offering financial literacy sessions to those who have not had a bank account or used mobile money before; and (3) strengthening the Government of Sudan’s capacity to implement safety net programs by offering technical assistance in areas such as payment delivery, grievance mechanisms, and monitoring. Canada is one of many donors contributing to this larger program, which is managed by the World Bank and implemented through the Government of Sudan and the World Food Programme. This project expects to reach up to 80% of the Sudanese population (over 30 million people) with cash transfers, including 30% women-headed households.
