Published purpose

This project aims to improve the lives of vulnerable Egyptian and Syrian children in Greater Cairo by addressing immediate education and child protection needs, and by promoting social cohesion in refugee hosting communities. Egypt has seen a major influx of refugees following the onset of the Syrian crisis. Children are the most vulnerable group in both refugee and host communities, and Egypt’s Ministry of Education is struggling to cope with additional demands. Project activities include: (1) providing training to teachers, school managers, board members and Ministry of Education representatives on active learning methodologies, supervisory skills, child rights, participation and protection; (2) engaging students on child rights, participation and protection; (3) providing gender and psychological support training to teachers and social workers; (4) renovating school sanitation and classroom facilities; (5) providing educational materials for vulnerable students; and (6) conducting outreach activities for children, parents and community members to enhance social cohesion. The project reaches up to 15,000 Syrian and Egyptian girls and boys, 180 teachers and social workers, 84 school managers, and almost 200 Board of Trustee members. The project forms part of Canada’s comprehensive response to the regional impact of the Syrian crisis.
