Published purpose

This project aims to contribute to reductions in violence and insecurity caused by weapons, ammunition and other items diverted or lost from peacekeeping operations and then misused. The proliferation of illicit arms and ammunition in fragile environments adversely affects the safety and security of civilians, peacekeepers and other mission personnel, while also undermining peacekeepers ability to implement their mandate. Project activities include: (1) building consensus within high-level constituencies and policy processes on the need to better understand and respond to the threat of diversion/loss from peace operations; and (2) developing and helping to implement a range of tools, including standard operating procedures, good practice guidelines, and training modules, to improve practices of top troop contributing countries.
