Published purpose
July 2017 - Niger continues to face significant humanitarian challenges related to food insecurity, malnutrition, and forced displacement. The expansion of the conflict in Nigeria, which has led to hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons, returnees and Nigerian refugees in Diffa region, has added to Niger’s chronic vulnerability. In addition, Diffa region is affected by a hepatitis E outbreak, which has led to more death amongst the population, particularly for women who are disproportionally affected by the disease. With GAC’s support, CARE Canada addresses the urgent humanitarian needs of up to 32,520 people in Diffa region. Project activities include: (1) distributing baby kits and dignity kits for women and girls, which contain items required to maintain feminine hygiene, dignity and respect in their daily lives, benefiting up to 2,500 women; (2) distributing domestic gas kits for food preparation to up to 1,625 women; and (3) creating Village Savings and Loan Associations targeting up to 2,000 women to help support their livelihoods.
