Published purpose

March 2017 – As a result of the ongoing political tension and insecurity in neighbouring Burundi, north-western Tanzania has seen 158,000 new refugees arrive since April 2015, a number which is expected to double in 2017. Tanzania already hosts 70,000 Congolese refugees. Altogether, the high number of refugees has strained the local response capacity of both Tanzanian authorities and aid agencies. There is now a critical need for international support to rebuild and refit existing camps, establish new ones, as well as to provide food and other basic services to all refugees on an ongoing basis. With GAC’s support, Oxfam Canada is providing water and sanitation, protection, and livelihoods support to an estimated 107,500 Burundian refugees and host community members living in or around the Nduta refugee camp in Kigoma region, Tanzania.
