Published purpose

September 2017 - Hurricane Irma struck Cuba’s north-central coast as a Category 5 hurricane, moving along the northern Cuban coast, with wind gusts of more than 200 km/h. The disaster has caused widespread flooding in northern Cuba including Havana, home to 2.1 million people, causing power outages, loss of access to clean water, and destroying crops, homes and urban infrastructure. With GAC’s support, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is contributing to meeting the emergency needs of vulnerable women and girls related to reproductive and sexual health. Project activities include: (1) restoring the operating capacity for reproductive and maternal health services among people living in affected communities; (2) providing obstetric and neonatal care through local health institutions; and (3) contributing to the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV in adult and young women and men affected by Hurricane Irma.
