Published purpose
September 2017 – Successive earthquakes, including one of a magnitude of 7.1, struck Mexico in September 2017 and caused over 440 deaths. Thousands of families are left homeless, and numerous buildings are destroyed. Mexico City was heavily affected and a state of emergency was declared for 122 municipalities in Puebla and 33 municipalities in the State of Morelos. The Mexican Red Cross Society has already deployed more than 5,000 volunteers to respond to the crisis, but the needs are extensive. With GAC’s support, the Canadian Red Cross is dispatching 1,500 tents from warehouses in Mississauga Ontario to support emergency relief operations in Mexico. The tents are providing temporary shelter for up to 7,500 people affected by the earthquakes.
