Published purpose

October 2018 – On September 28, 2018, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Sulawesi, Indonesia. Following the earthquake, a tsunami hit the regions of Palu, Donggala and Sigi. The disasters caused widespread flooding and devastation in central Sulawesi, damaging basic services such as water and health services, and destroying homes and urban infrastructure. An estimated 2.4 million people have been affected and close to 200,000 are in immediate need of humanitarian assistance. With GAC’s support, CARE Canada is addressing urgent humanitarian needs of up to 15,500 vulnerable people (3,100 households) affected by the earthquakes and tsunami in the Donggala region, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Project activities include: (1) providing hygiene awareness sessions and distributing gender- sensitive hygiene kits; (2) repairing or constructing communal latrine facilities; (3) providing emergency shelter and non-food items to disaster-affected households; and (4) providing cash-for-work activities and unconditional funding grants.
