Published purpose

This project provides an enhanced level of support for the negotiation and implementation of peace initiatives in the Sudan conflict. It also aims to reinforce the agreements reached between the key players in the conflict, with particular focus on involving Sudanese civil society stakeholders in the peace process. The activities designed within the project aim to enhance the participation of civil society and to emphasize the focus on certain issues that are critical to attaining peace, such as improving governmental capabilities in key areas. Some of the expected outcomes include: a peace agreement that would end the longest lasting conflict in Africa; a return for the Sudanese to a normal and productive life; and providing an opportunity for the donors to concentrate their efforts towards sustainable development. The executive agencies in activities under the project include: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the World Bank Institute, International Crisis Group, Project Ploughshares, Canadian Parliamentary Centre, Oxfam Canada and the Centre for Conflict Resolution.
