Published purpose

CIDA's contribution provides expertise to the Ministry of Agriculture to support China's efforts to improve animal health extension systems and services. The project promotes human health through the prevention and control of animal diseases by helping China meet World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE)’s compliance requirements. (Note: in May 2003 the Office became the World Organisation for Animal Health but kept its historical acronym OIE.) The project aims to strengthen measures to protect animal health in response to recent outbreaks of avian flu and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). It also helps small farmers deal with the implications and challenges relating to China's compliance with OIE standards in animal health, production, and disease control. This project involves technical assistance to establish extension systems and services and to undertake pilot programs to help farmers better prevent animal disease, including diseases transmissible to humans. Ultimately, the project aims to influence policy-makers, to demonstrate the results of policy implementation, and, more importantly, to create a sustainable system for the effective delivery of animal health services through the training of trainers, farmers, and extension workers.
