Published purpose

The project supports the World Food Program's (WFP) Purchase for Progress (P4P) Program in Guatemala, which is part of its overall Strategic Plan for 2008-2011 and its Guatemala Country Program for 2010 to 2014. Canada's contribution to the World Food Program's (WFP) Purchase for Progress (P4P) Program improves food security and increase the income of low-income farmers in Guatemala by connecting them to markets. The major activities of the project are: (i) provide technical assistance and share best practices among approximately 2,890 small-scale farm families on crop management and technologies to increase quality and quantity of yields; (ii) promote post-harvest management to reduce losses; (iii) assist 25 farmer organizations to increase sales and receive fair market prices from buyers; (iv) purchase by WFP of about 7,261 metric tons of the crop surpluses produced by small-scale farmer organizations; (v) strengthen the business management skills of 25 small-scale farmer organizations and increase women farmers' participation, representation and skills.
