Published purpose

This project, in partnership with Tanzania’s Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and local government authorities, is supporting the achievement of results of the Government of Tanzania’s third Health Sector Strategic Plan (HSSPIII). HSSPIII emphasizes the delivery of essential health services at the district level; reforming and strengthening regional and national referral hospitals; improving central support systems (including infrastructure, health management information systems, drug supplies, transport, and communications and information technology); dealing more effectively with issues in human resources for health; improving the level, appropriateness and sustainability of health care financing; promoting public private partnership; implementing the national strategy for combating HIV/AIDS; and improving government and development partner relations to improve harmonization and alignment of external and Tanzanian resources in a more effective partnership. The implementation of HSSPIII is improving the management and delivery of primary health care services such as the prevention and treatment of common illnesses to improve child survival and maternal health. Canada is one of several donors supporting the Government of Tanzania’s basket/pooled fund for the health sector to improve service delivery and strengthen the health system overall. Since 2006, Canada has been working in close cooperation with other donors and the Government of Tanzania to focus on effective, transparent, and accountable country systems; increase donor coordination and harmonization; and strengthen mutual accountability. This support also fosters greater policy dialogue among donors, government, and partners, thus helping to strengthen efforts for effective, focussed aid, as well as long-term development results. This project is continuously monitored and evaluated in coordination with other donors. This project is part of Canada's Maternal, Newborn and Child Health commitment.
