Published purpose

The project aimed to facilitate the legitimate, fair and peaceful delivery of the 2011 Referendum on Self Determination for South Sudan, to help ensure it would be valid in the eyes of the Sudanese people and the international community. The January 2011 referendum, which resulted in an overwhelming 99 percent of voters in the ten states of South Sudan voting for independence, was one of the final steps in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). Through a contribution to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Referendum basket fund, the project supported the organization, operations, and monitoring of the referendum. More specifically, CIDA's contribution to the project supported gender-sensitive civic and voter education especially amongst marginalized groups, such as women and internally displaced persons.
