Published purpose
March 2014 - Varying levels of political and inter-communal violence in East Africa and the Horn of Africa continue to cause significant displacement, both within the affected countries and across national borders. In addition, cycles of chronic drought, as well as localised seasonal flooding and rising global food prices, also continue to drive high levels of food insecurity and malnutrition across the region. Human rights abuses, at the hands of both governments and other armed groups, also continue to be a significant concern in the region. With GAC support, the ICRC is addressing the above concerns in Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, and Tanzania. Specific areas of activity include emergency response (provision of water, sanitation, hygiene, health care, shelter), support for livelihoods and resilience activities, and family reunification for separated or displaced households.
