Ghana Rural Integrated Development

Published purpose

The project aims to improve the well-being of women and girls in 30 rural communities in Ghana’s northern and Brong Ahafo regions, including aspects of food security, health, safety, and social standing. The word “Babanayaa” translates to “one day they will see that we have changed”. The project seeks to help 1,500 women, including 750 vulnerable women, attain greater well-being : (1) through an increased income due to agricultural (peanut) and livestock (goat) production and better market access; (2) by helping young women attend primary and secondary school to increase their level of education; and (3) by helping women participate more fully in community-decision-making; (4) by training women’s cooperative leaders and extension officers in agriculture, financial management, and skills for a healthy future (including sexual and reproductive health, hygiene and safe food preparation, human rights) to better advocate for their own well-being; and (5) by training community responsibility-bearers in gender-responsive justice, land use and environmental care, giving them an increased ability to protect the rights of women. The project is implemented by Ghana Rural Integrated Development in collaboration with Northern Empowerment Association.
