Published purpose

The project aims to improve the well-being of those living in the Gonaïves commune in Haiti. The project works to integrate waste management through allowing the sale of carbon credits and the production of green energy through the recovery of biogas produced by the decomposition of waste, which allows, in the long term, to self-finance waste management operations. Project activities include: (1) carrying out engineering analyses; (2) installing the first biomethanation plant; (3) closing the current unofficial landfill site and reintegrating the disadvantaged population and women in recycling and waste collection activitie; (4) establishing an energy sales contract and carbon credits; (5) implementing a comprehensive campaign to raise awareness around healthy and smart management of waste and the environment; (6) providing job training in the field of waste collection and landfill management; and (7) establishing a team of waste collection and recycling operators. The project activities aim to directly reach 50,000 people in Gonaïves (60% of whom are women) by the end of the project.
