Published purpose
This contribution provides short-term strategic support for the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) - an African-led model in tertiary education in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), which Canada helped expand into a Pan-African network of centres of excellence for post-graduate training, research and public engagement in mathematical sciences. This funding will provide the needed stability for AIMS to consolidate its operations and renew its policy coverage in the face of rapid growth in program areas such as climate change, industry linkages and artificial intelligence. African-led and based, endorsed by the African Union, with over 15 partnerships with African universities and a strong long-standing Canadian connection, AIMS will be able to more economically and efficiently deliver educational opportunities throughout its network, which enables Africa’s brightest students to become creative thinkers, solution creators and innovators that propel scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency on the continent. To date, AIMS has produced almost two thousand young Master’s level graduates (of which 33% women), representing 43 countries throughout Africa.
